Creamy Chick-Fil-A Banana Pudding Delight

Prepare the Pudding:
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt.
Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.
Reduce the heat and cook for 2 more minutes, then remove from heat.
Combine with Egg Yolks:
Slowly whisk a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the beaten egg yolks to temper them.
Gradually whisk the egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture.
Return to the heat and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 more minutes.
Finish the Pudding:
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until smooth.
Let the pudding cool slightly.
Assemble the Banana Pudding:
In a serving dish, layer vanilla wafer cookies, banana slices, and pudding.
Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of pudding on top.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
Serve:
Before serving, top with whipped cream if desired.
