Instructions:
- In a preheated pan over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef. Halfway through, add minced garlic and continue cooking until golden brown. Remove excess fat and transfer the beef and garlic to a slow cooker.
- In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, black pepper, red pepper flakes (if using), brown sugar, and beef broth. Pour the sauce over the beef in the slow cooker.
- Add thinly sliced onions to the slow cooker and stir to combine with the sauce and beef.
- Cover and cook on low heat for 4-5 hours or on high heat for 2-3 hours.
- About 30 minutes before serving, stir in the coleslaw mix. It will soften while retaining some crunch.
- Cook the chow mein noodles according to package instructions. Toss the cooked noodles with the beef and sauce mixture just before serving.
- Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
Notes:
- Omit the red pepper flakes for a milder dish.
- Substitute ground chicken or turkey for a lighter alternative.
- Add extra vegetables such as carrots, snap peas, or bell peppers during the last hour of cooking.
- Use leftovers to make lettuce wraps for a delicious lunch option.
